Academic Integrity Updates: Process, Resources, & Policy

The Office of the Provost is pleased to announce new resources to support students and faculty for proactive education for academic integrity, a new online submissions process for reporting suspected violations, and accompanying policy updates.

Resources: Provide proactive education to your students for academic integrity with these new resources. Addressing academic integrity early and often in your course will help students to better understand the importance of academic integrity and how to avoid violations.

Process for Reporting Alleged Violations: The Report of an Academic Integrity Violation (RAIV) form is now submitted via an online process. A new Guide for Academic Integrity Violation Meetings needs to be completed prior to and shared with the student when an instructor suspects a violation; the Guide is submitted via the online RAIV process along with other documentation. These changes are designed to make the process more efficient and more educational for students.

Policy Update: The Academic Integrity Policy has been updated to reflect the new online submission process for suspected violations. In addition, section V. 3. includes new language indicating the importance of proactive education for academic integrity and a recognition that students may come to Rowan or to a specific course with differences in knowledge and skill regarding academic integrity. Each instructor has the responsibility and opportunity to provide proactive education to students for academic integrity as it applies in their course. In addition, the new language makes explicit that instructors who suspect a violation can, at their discretion, provide an appropriate educational intervention that increases students’ awareness of and skills to avoid violation in lieu of filing a RAIV, provided that the students’ grade is not decreased by the intervention.

Thank you to the many people who contributed to these resources and process improvements: Review Board members; students and faculty who participated in the creation of the videos with Rowan Productions under the leadership of Karen Murtha, Stephen Fleming, and Jon Akass; Danielle Gougon who developed the Canvas module; Trish Yurak who developed much of the website content; and the Academic Integrity Working Group (Bonnie Angelone, Cheryl Bodnar, Chia Chien, Celeste Del Russo, Kristen diNovi, Stephen Fleming, Danielle Gougon, Penny McPherson-Myers, Karen Murtha, Jennfer Ravelli, Karyn Tappe, Trish Yurak). A special kudos to Lynne Hentschke in the Office of the Provost whose expertise sustains the entire AIV process and has contributed to all of the improvements listed here.
